Google Business Profile vs Google My Business: What Changed Through 2026

Key takeaways:

  • Google My Business and Google Business Profile are one free product; Google switched to the new name in November 2021.
  • Single-location owners now edit the profile from Google Search or the Maps app, with no separate dashboard needed.
  • The standalone Google My Business app stopped working in July 2022; chat and call history followed in July 2024.
  • In 2025 Google blocked or removed over 292 million policy-violating reviews, then added new spam defenses in April 2026.
  • The rename never touched rankings: relevance, distance and prominence, including review count, still decide local results.
What this guide covers

Google Business Profile and Google My Business are the same free tool under two names: Google rebranded Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021, and nothing about your profile had to move. If you are searching for a difference between them, the honest answer is that there is no functional gap, only a name change and a shift in how you reach the controls on Google Search and Google Maps. That matters because old tutorials, screenshots and help threads still say "Google My Business," which leaves owners hunting for a dashboard or an app that no longer exists. This guide lays out a dated timeline from Google Places to 2026, shows what changed for single-shop owners versus chains, points you to where the settings live today, and lists the 2026 updates Google has actually confirmed.

Google Business Profile vs Google My Business: the short answer

Google My Business (GMB) was the original name; Google Business Profile (GBP) is the current one, adopted in November 2021. The tool still lets you manage how your business appears on Google Search and Maps: hours, address, photos, videos, products or services, posts and the business description. Nothing was removed in the rename, and there was no account to migrate.

Whatever the dashboard is called, the payoff of keeping it active is the same: online visibility and trust from potential customers, which customer reviews feed directly. The profile is free, but reviews do not arrive on their own.

Making that review flow easy is where a counter tool helps: a Google review plate turns a satisfied customer into a posted review in one tap or scan, before they leave and forget.

Google Business Profile: the free Google tool that controls how a company appears on Search and Maps, including the local map pack. It is the same product formerly called Google My Business, now edited directly from Google Search and the Google Maps app.

Why Google renamed My Business to Business Profile

Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile to "keep things simple," in the company's words, and to move day-to-day management out of a separate app and into the places customers already search: Google Search and Google Maps. Search Engine Land reported the change on November 4, 2021.

The groundwork started earlier. In August 2020, Google's small business blog announced that owners could create posts, reply to reviews, add photos and update business information right from Search and Maps. The 2021 rename made that route the default for single listings. The older web console survived for larger accounts under a new label, Business Profile Manager.

Google My Business timeline: from Google Places to 2026

The Google My Business timeline runs from Google Places in 2010 to Google Business Profile today, and each step below is documented by Google on its blogs, help center or developer pages.

Date What changed Documented by
April 2010 Local Business Center becomes Google Places Google Maps blog
May 2012 Google+ Local launches, with Zagat scores Google Maps blog
June 2014 Google My Business unifies Search, Maps and Google+ Google Inside AdWords blog
August 2020 Owners can edit directly in Search and Maps Google Keyword blog
November 2021 Renamed Google Business Profile; Business Profile Manager for chains Google, via Search Engine Land
July 2022 Google My Business app no longer available Google email to owners
March 2024 Websites built with Business Profiles turned off Google Business Profile Help
July 31, 2024 Chat and call history removed Google Business Profile Help
November 3, 2025 My Business Q&A API discontinued Google for Developers
April 2026 Scam review detection and owner edit alerts Google Keyword blog

Two rows explain most of today's confusion. The 2022 app shutdown is why app store searches come up empty. The March 2024 shutdown is why free sites built from a profile disappeared; Google kept the redirect working only until June 10, 2024.

Owners who relied on it now need their own domain in the profile; our guide to connecting your profile and site covers both directions.

Chat followed the same path. Google's help page on changes to Business Profile chat and call history states that both features stopped on July 31, 2024. Verified businesses in select regions can now add a WhatsApp or text messaging option instead.

What the change means for you

The practical impact of the Google Business Profile rename depends on how you manage the profile. A single-shop owner gains a faster route, editing straight from Search or Maps. A chain keeps a web dashboard, now branded Business Profile Manager.

Single-location owner

Manage everything from Google Search or Maps: sign in, then edit hours, photos and offers, or respond to reviews in place. No app needed.

Multi-location manager

Keep using a web dashboard, now called Business Profile Manager, for bulk edits and performance insights across many profiles from one screen.

Agency or reseller

Client workflows stay close to before. A partner agency still gets access as a manager on each profile, with the same core controls.

For a brand with many sites, the rename did not touch the bulk tools. Spreadsheet imports, store codes and groups still live in Business Profile Manager, and bulk verification remains reserved for 10 or more locations of the same business. Our walkthrough on managing several locations covers that setup step by step.

For a single shop, the shift is mostly about habit: sign in with the owner account, and the edit controls appear on top of the public profile that potential customers see.

Whatever Google calls the profile, reviews still drive local ranking

Place an NFC and QR code plate on your counter. Customers tap or scan once to open your Google review page, on iPhone or Android, with no app and no subscription to manage.

Where to manage your profile now

For a single business, the fastest way to manage your Google Business Profile is to sign in to the owner account and search your business name and city, or "my business," on Google Search. In the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right. Multi-site brands still start from business.google.com.

One thing to stop looking for: the standalone Google My Business app. Google told owners that beginning July 2022 the app would no longer be available, and pointed them to Google Maps and Google Search instead. No replacement app exists for a single shop.

Once you are in, the product editor is one of the most underused sections of the profile. Our tutorial on listing products on your profile walks through the fields, the photo rules and Google's review process for each item.

  • Do: search your business name and city on Google while signed in, then edit on the spot.
  • Do: use the Business tab in the Google Maps app to update hours, photos and posts.
  • Don't: search the app store for the old Google My Business app; it was retired in 2022.
  • Don't: dismiss a tutorial just because it says GMB; most steps still apply.
  • Don't: create a second profile because the name confused you, which risks a duplicate.

Does the rename affect your local SEO or reviews

No. The rename from Google My Business to Google Business Profile had no effect on local SEO, customer reviews or how a profile performs. Google still ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and your ratings, posts and accurate details carry the same weight as before the switch.

Google's help center defines prominence as how well-known a business is, based partly on how many sites link to it and how many reviews it has. There is no way to pay Google for a better local ranking. The work that moves the needle is unchanged: keep the profile complete, accurate and active.

More reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.

Freshness counts as well. Google's 2026 best practices playbook for service businesses, based on Google internal data, reports 7x more clicks for businesses with complete profiles and 5x more views for Business Profiles that are updated regularly.

Paid ads are a separate product. A Google Ads account buys labeled sponsored slots, not a better organic local position, which is why optimizing the profile itself remains the important work.

What changed in Google Business Profile in 2026

Google Business Profile changed in 2026 on two fronts: spam protection and review management. Google announced new defenses against review scams and fake edits in April 2026, and its developer change log added recurring posts and review moderation details through October 2026. None of it brought back the old name.

Google reports it blocked or removed over 292 million policy-violating reviews in 2025, according to its April 2026 update on protecting businesses on Maps.

New defenses against review scams

In its April 16, 2026 post, Google said its systems now detect known scam patterns and stop suspicious reviews before they go live. A spam spike can now pause new reviews on a profile. Google removes the fake content, alerts the owner and shows consumers a banner explaining why contributions are temporarily paused. The same post says Google removed over 13 million fake Business Profiles in 2025.

Email alerts before major edits go live

Verified, active owners now receive proactive emails about significant edits to their profile, so they can review a change before it is published.

Recurring posts and review reply status

On the developer side, the Business Profile APIs change log lists review reply moderation status (April 1, 2026), recurring local posts (April 7), review media items (April 20), a policy violation field explaining rejected replies (July 1) and gluten-free and dairy-free menu options (October 9). These are API features for management platforms, not confirmed changes to the Search and Maps editor.

What 2026 did not change

Google has not announced any new name for the product in 2026, and the My Business Q&A API has stayed discontinued since November 3, 2025. Claims of a 2026 ranking shift away from prominence are not reflected on Google's local ranking help page, which still lists relevance, distance and prominence.

GBP vs GMB: what to say now

Use "Google Business Profile" or "Business Profile" in current conversation, and treat "Google My Business" as the old name for the same thing. Both still appear across the web, so when a tool, agency or digital marketing article references GMB, read it as GBP. The terminology lag, not a product split, causes the confusion.

Google has added two lookalike names since then. Business Manager is not Business Profile Manager. Business Manager is a hub, reached from Merchant Center or Business Profile once the accounts are linked, for managing some Google apps and store listings. A brand profile is a separate profile on Google Search for select e-commerce retailers, shown when someone searches only the brand name. The Google Business Profile Community support forum even hosts threads asking how Business Manager differs from Business Profile Manager.

Name What it is Who uses it
Google My Business Old name of the product, 2014 to 2021 No one, officially
Google Business Profile Free listing on Search and Maps Businesses meeting customers in person
Business Profile Manager Web console for bulk editing Brands with many locations
Business Manager Hub linking Merchant Center and your profile Retailers selling products
Brand profile Search profile for online sellers Select e-commerce retailers

Developer naming lagged the longest: Google's API documentation still sits under a /my-business/ address, while the pages now say Business Profile APIs.

So a vendor quoting the "GMB API" is usually describing the current Business Profile APIs, not a legacy product.

Worth knowing:

A business with both a physical store and an online shop can qualify for a Business Profile and a brand profile, according to Google Business Profile Help. The Business Profile shows on Search and Maps for local searches; the brand profile appears only on Search.

None of this requires action from you. Tools like Digifeel sit upstream, helping collect the reviews that feed the profile, but the profile itself stays free and lives inside Google.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a Google Business Profile?

Any business that meets customers in person, at its own address or at theirs, benefits from a Google Business Profile, because it shapes what local customers see on Google Search and Maps. Without a claimed and verified profile, you cannot respond to reviews, publish offers, correct your hours or check edits suggested by other people.

Can I have two Business Profiles on Google?

Yes, when they represent distinct locations or distinct businesses. Google's guidelines expect one profile per physical location, so a chain can manage many profiles from one account. Two profiles for the same business at the same address count as duplicates, and Google can merge them, combining their ratings into a single profile.

Is Google Business Profile better than a website?

Neither replaces the other. A Business Profile captures local searches on Google Maps and Search, with ratings, hours and directions in one panel. A website gives you full control over content, products and Google Analytics tracking. Google turned off the free sites built from Business Profiles in March 2024, so a separate site now matters more.

Does Google Business Profile cost anything?

No. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free, and Google's help center states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Costs appear only if you choose paid extras around the profile, such as Google Ads campaigns, Local Services Ads or third-party management software.

What to do next with your profile

The name on the dashboard changed, but the work did not: a complete, active profile with a steady flow of fresh reviews still wins local visibility. If you learned the tool as Google My Business, nothing about your profile broke in the switch, and there was never a migration to run. What did change is where you edit and which features survived. Chat, call history, the old app and the free websites are gone, while 2026 brought stronger spam defenses and edit alerts. So the useful question is not what to call it, but when you last checked it. When did you last refresh your hours, photos and posts?
